Case Study: National Wildlife Federation

The National Wildlife Federation works to unite all Americans to ensure that wildlife and people thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Their work spans wildlife recovery and habitat restoration, climate solutions and clean energy, environmental justice, and resilient communities. The organization includes a 22-person executive team, a large national staff, and a network of regional centers and affiliates operating across the country.

We partnered with the National Wildlife Federation to support sensemaking and strategic clarity around organizational change.

Our work included:

  • Providing a holistic map of the organizational system and key intervention points for change

  • Offering clear reflections on the strengths and limitations of existing approaches and mindsets

  • Recommending high-impact areas of focus and sequencing for change efforts

  • Providing strategy coaching to the DEI leadership team to support coordinated, system-aware action

The Federation wanted to deepen its alignment with liberatory values across its organization and decision-making processes.

There was significant buy-in from key leaders, but the scale and complexity of the organization made it difficult to know where to start—or how to roll out meaningful change without creating fragmentation or resistance. They needed a way to translate values into action across multiple layers of leadership, programs, and regions.

The National Wildlife Federation gained a clearer, shared understanding of how liberatory values could be operationalized across a large, multi-layered organization.

Leadership developed greater clarity about where to focus change efforts, how to sequence them, and how to avoid common pitfalls associated with large-scale transformation. The DEI leadership team was better positioned to guide coordinated, system-aware action—laying the groundwork for durable change that could scale across programs, regions, and affiliates.
